Rising concerns over adolescent risk behaviours and mental health: findings from the 2021/22 HBSC Cyprus survey

The 2021/2022 HBSC Cyprus survey results present a comprehensive view of the health and well-being of Cypriot adolescents. This latest report, encompassing responses from over 4,800 students aged 11 to 15, reveals significant trends in risky behaviours, mental health, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trends in risky behaviours

  • E-cigarette usage: A worrying increase in e-cigarette use was observed, with 38% of 15-year-olds reporting having tried them, a significant jump from 17% in the previous survey.
  • Waterpipe and cannabis use: 33% of 15-year-olds and 12% of 13-year-olds have experimented with waterpipe smoking. Cannabis usage is reported by 7% of 15-year-olds.
  • Physical activity: Alarmingly, only 58% of 15-year-olds are engaging in regular physical activity, indicating a trend towards more sedentary lifestyles.

Mental health concerns

The survey draws attention to the increasing mental health challenges faced by older adolescents. Notably, students aged 15 report heightened levels of anxiety, nervousness, and feelings of being overwhelmed, more so than their younger peers. This trend emphasises the critical requirement for enhanced mental health support and targeted interventions within educational settings and the broader community.

COVID-19 impact

  • Health and well-being: The pandemic’s impact is evident, with 19% of adolescents having tested positive for COVID-19 and half reporting a close family member contracting the virus. Many students expressed that the pandemic negatively affected their mental health, academic performance, sleep, and nutrition.
  • Social and academic life: Students recounted disruptions in their social interactions and academic routines, contributing to increased stress and anxiety levels.

Recommendations for action

  • Mental health support: Enhancing access to mental health resources and counselling services in schools.
Healthy Lifestyle Promotion: Encouraging physical activities and educating adolescents about the risks associated with e-cigarettes, waterpipe, and substance use.
  • Post-pandemic recovery: Focusing on strategies to mitigate the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescents’ well-being.
